Know your Vehicle
The type of vehicle being insured has an affect on one’s ability to purchase low cost auto insurance. It is generally known that those cars that are driven at fast speeds — such as sports cars —are charged higher rates. This is due to the statistical evidence regarding such vehicles’ high risk of being involved in accidents. This is also the case with expensive luxury cars which are also charged more, mostly due to their rarity and the higher cost involved in repairing them due to the expensive parts or to fully replace them. Another factor that needs to be considered is the year in which the car was manufactured. This is because an older car has less cash value than a newer car. It also is less expensive to insure.
Other determining factors when setting auto insurance premium costs include the purpose for which the vehicle is used and how often it is driven. This will determine whether or not the rates will be less expensive. While there are cars that are driven for leisure, others are used for daily transportation to and from work. As a rule, cars that are used for leisure are driven less compared to cars that are used to get to and from work. It is more expensive to insure cars that are driven more than those that are driven less.
Seek out Discounts
Insurance companies will offer discounts to customers who conform to particular guidelines and show that they are responsible in other areas of their life. For example, you can take a defensive drivers course to get one discount. After you have passed the class, you will receive a discount for a particular period of time, after which the class can be retaken and passed to maintain the savings.
There is another discount that is quite common and that is the good student discount which allows for both high school and college-aged students to receive less expensive insurance when they earn good grades. The required grade point average differs from one company to another but it is generally set at a “B” average or better as the minimum requirement. It is found that usually students who work hard at their schoolwork are more responsible than their peers. The responsible attitude attached to academics can also affect driving skills, often resulting in more cautious drivers.
Compare Insurance Companies
Lastly, to find the cheapest rates being offered, drivers need to compare prices from a number of local companies. It should not be assumed that because your driving record is clean, you have the right car which is not too expensive or driven too much, and have taken a defensive driving course that this will automatically give you the lowest possible premium. It is still possible that another company will offer the same coverage even cheaper. It is therefore necessary to do some comparison shopping before deciding on the coverage that is best for you.
Most drivers want the cheapest policy but they are not always that easy to find. Some effort is required. You need to search out the best options.
